Renault Koleos

The Renault Koleos is a product of the Renault-Nissan alliance, sharing development and equipment with the Nissan X-Trail, and manufactured in Korea by Renault-Samsung, making it a crossover Euro-Asian production. It debuted in 2008, with midlife facelifts in 2010-11, but is now presented as a major update, an obviously much improved version.

Renalt Keleos

The second-generation Koleos features Renault’s proven powertrain and technologies. The 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine joins a new X-Tronic CVT automatic transmission for enhanced performance, driving enjoyment and more optimised fuel consumption. This efficient engine delivers maximum power of 126kW at 6000rpm and torque of 226Nm, responsive at low and mid-range speeds, with 200Nm torque from as low as 1800rpm.

The tautly lined bonnet contributes to a powerful look, an impression heightened by chrome embellishments visually lengthening the front end elegantly and dynamically, setting the Koleos apart.

At the rear, Renault’s trademark style is again prominently on display. Wide horizontal led tail lights amplify an impression of width and draw the eye to the Renault logo on the tailgate. Chrome inserts set into the lower part of the rear bumper take the shape of twin exhaust tail pipes, a detail that is complementary with all-new Koleos’ overall exterior design.

A large modular boot and numerous handy storage solutions give 458 up to 1690 litres space. A 2705mm wheelbase and total length of 4672mm are amongst longest in class, giving Koleos record interior space and making it a D-segment SUV. Knee room of 289mm outshines rivals and rear passengers have generous head, shoulder and elbow room.

The very well styled SUV with extensive range of equipment and carefully-appointed interior subtly blends robust SUV design with an expression of quality expected of a large family saloon, using attractive, scratch-resistant materials such as satin-finish chrome for the steering wheel, gear lever and air vent inserts.

The centre console is covered by a protective film that is hardy and pleasing to touch. Cushion-backed dash and door panel materials also contribute to the cabin’s restful ambience, with leather upholstery and leather-trimmed armrests featuring contrasting top stitching. Cabin ambience is enhanced with customisable LED lighting in choice of hues ranging from green, blue, yellow, red to violet, depending on mood.

The Koleos is equipped with the R-LINK 2 multimedia system connected tablet featured across Renault’s high-end range, controlling functions such as infotainment, navigation, hands-free telephony, radio, and driver aids such as blind spot warning, rear view camera and front, rear and side parking sensors.

Drive data (example: speed, RPM and fuel consumption) is displayed on a 7-inch colour screen behind the steering wheel, in driver's line of sight.

Access is facilitated by wide aperture doors, opening to 70 and 77 degrees front and rear respectively, amongst best in class.

Overall, the Koleos is very silent inside. Accelerating hard it is easy to underestimate speed, but glancing at the speedo tells otherwise.

The 3 basic equipment levels offered for the new Koleos are designated LIFE, ZEN, and INTENS, with highlights of the increasing levels of equipment being....

Entry level front-wheel-drive-only LIFE having 7'' landscape display, hill start assist, tyre pressure monitoring, rear sensors and camera, front running lights, auto rain sensing wipers and dusk sensing headlights, dual zone climate, 17'' alloys.

ZEN additions to LIFE including optional 4WD, sat nav, electric park brake, heated front seats, engine start button, remote central locking, 18'' alloys, optional sunroof and driver safety pack.

INTENS additions to ZEN including standard 4WD with specialised handling technology, 8.7'' portrait display, LED headlamps, remote start, blind spot/collision/lane departure warnings, advanced emergency braking, automated parking assistance, side park sensors, hands free power tailgate, high power Bose audio, electric power sunroof.

In summary, impressions from the launch were that the updated version greatly improves both the interior and exterior design, range of equipment and features, and size of the Koleos, and it has become much more competitive in the medium SUV market, and is well worth trying and considering.
