Porsche 911 Carrera

The new generation Porsche 911 Carrera, world’s best-selling sports car for decades, arrives here in upgraded form to further extend its lead setting benchmarks in terms of performance, driving pleasure and efficiency, especially with respect to the new bi-turbo boxer engines, whilst rear-axle steering optionally available for the first time with the S model further extends driving dynamics.

The Carrera may now be turbocharged, but that doesn't make the 911 Turbo model redundant, it will still have a larger engine and greater power, however turbocharging the Carrera makes it more efficient and higher powered in its own category, and this is becoming a common theme in the drive to improve engines.

Four variants are offered – Carrera Coupe, Carrera Cabriolet and 'S' enhanced versions of both, priced from $217,000 to $478,000, plus on road cost.

In a nutshell, the latest 911 unveils a new three-litre six-cylinder flat boxer engine with bi-intercooled bi-turbo charging, auto stop/start, new infotainment system and advanced chassis balancing the combination of performance and comfort. Transmission is 7 speed two plated clutch manual or optional 7 speed dual clutch PDK auto, rear wheel drive.

The entry level variant now pumps out 272kW of power and 450Nm of torque. For the Carrera S and Carrera 4S, the blown boxer outputs 309kW and 500Nm, representing a 15kW and 60Nm hike from predecessors. The S models have more power because of greater turbo compression, special exhausts and engine tuning, and the Carrera S with dual clutch auto and Sport Chrono Pack is the first Carrera capable of breaking 4 seconds for 0-100 Km/h, at 3.9 sec, with top speed 308 km/h.

With reduced engine size the 911's rated fuel consumption is reduced 12 per cent. The Carrera with PDK dual-clutch transmission now consumes just 7.4L/100 km, S-model with PDK 7.7L/100km, and 4S is rated 7.9 L/100km, 1.2-litre less than its predecessor.

Performance upgrades involving chassis now see Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) standard on all Carrera models, with ride height lowered by 10mm. Other changes include revised dampers and wider tyres and rims.

The new Carrera's now have steering wheel mounted rotary switch selection of four driving modes – Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual, plus when dual clutch equipped a special 20 second burst of all out acceleration capability for overtaking purposes.

Optional extras include a hydraulic 4cm lift for front end bump clearance, the Sport Exhaust System, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, ceramic brakes and Front Axle Life system, as well as active rear wheel steering, turning the opposite way to front wheels below 50 kph, and the same direction as front above 80 kph, giving tighter low speed turning, but more stable and gradual higher speed turning.

Exterior changes to the Porsche 911 Carrera are fairy subtle: new headlamps with four-point LED daytime running lights, new wheel designs, door handles without recess covers, redesigned tail lighting, and most noticeably a redesigned rear deck lid with vertical louvres, but overall the look has been refined and sharpened.

Cabin upgrades include adoption of the aforementioned new steering wheel and Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system. The new PCM is controlled via seven-inch touchscreen display featuring Apple CarPlay compatibility and navigation function, where you scroll through functions similarly to using a smartphone or computer, with online navigation drawing real-time traffic data from Google Maps. Hand writing on the touch screen is recognised, with word fragments producing suggestions to select from, as with a computer, making the 911 very much up to date.

I am not going to lie about it. The new Porsche Carrera is an excellent car that does not compromise on pose or poise, but you and I know we get what we pay for?
